Antenatal & Postnatal Depression

My first book, the self-help guide, Antenatal & Postnatal Depression, was published in 2000 following several articles I had written for women’s magazines on the subject. It was the first book to cover depression during pregnancy and as far as I know it remains the only book on Antenatal Depression (quite a shocking fact given that research has shown as many as 15-20% of women suffer from depression during pregnancy). I wanted the book to be really practical and user friendly, so it’s full of case studies and self-help exercises. Writing it was also my first step in becoming a qualified life coach as I was so impressed by the ways in which people are able help themselves out of depression. During pregnancy women are usually unable to take anti-depressants, so being able to help yourself is crucial. I found it really reassuring to know that there are steps sufferers of antenatal depression can take to alleviate their feelings of depression and helplessness. I hope the book also goes some way to alleviating the feelings of stigma and shame that some sufferers also feel.

I have appeared on many TV and radio programmes (including the BBC and ITV National News, BBC Breakfast and BBC Radio Four’s Woman’s Hour) talking about this condition and I am happy to be contacted with any queries.
