Amanda’s Got Talent

Amanda’s Got Talent

It’s so nice to see  Amanda Holden launching her US career as a talking mannequin off the back of Susan Boyle’s breakdown.

Boyle had barely started her first basket-weaving class before Holden was hot-footing it to the States, clad in a skin-tight purple number, ‘look-at-me-I’m-famous’ shades, and skyscraper heels (as you do). Within a day she had appeared on just about every high profile chat show to declare that poor Susan wasn’t suffering from any kind of breakdown, she was simply ‘knackered’.

Well that’s OK then. I’ll have to remember to book myself into the nearest psychiatric unit the next time I’ve been over-doing it a tad.

According to a source close to Holden, she is ‘desperate to make it in the States’. Apparently she cannot bear the fact that Piers Morgan is famous for being famous on both sides of the pond and she is not. Well, God bless Susan Boyle and her ‘exhaustion’ then for providing her with the perfect break.

And then this morning I read the following in the newspaper. ‘Demi Moore, 46, and her husband Ashton Kutcher, 31, are willing to pay Susan Boyle £30.000 to perform at their wedding anniversary party. A source said: “They think Susan is brilliant, in a fantastically unique and kitsch way…”‘

Fantastically unique? Kitsch? What planet are these people living on? Every time I leave the house I see women just like Susan Boyle. Wasn’t that the point? That she looked just like an everyday woman and yet sang like an angel. Is it just me, or is there something truly sick about these pampered, surgically disfigured stars treating a vulnerable woman as if she were a play thing? Laughing at her saggy body, then gasping in mock awe as she demonstrates that you can actually look ‘ordinary’ and possess a talent.

  1. “According to a source close to Holden, she is ‘desperate to make it in the States’” – oh well, only six words too many in the source’s quote.

  2. I came by to congratulate you on your fantastic site. I love it.

I find the whole Susan Boyle tale very sad. Adulate celebrity and there are bound to be victims. At the same time, I find myself drawn in – I want to know what’s happening, in a shameful gossipy kind of a way. What is it in our (human) nature that makes ‘celebrity’ so fascinating?

I’m looking forward to talking to your writing groups about my new book. Please tell them to be gentle… it’s my first book.

Now, where’s that virtual cuppa? And can I reciprocate by inviting you to a Virtual Book Launch I’m hosting on my blog – everyone is welcome. leighrussell.blogspot.com

  3. woops – I see I managed to misspell my own name on that comment… (Just as well my book had professional proof readers!)

  4. Here, here. It’s not much better than the way the Victorians treated sideshow freaks. Come to think of it I might grow a beard and have a go at tap dancing. Well, you never know. Move over Elephant Man – the bearded lady tap dancer is here.

  5. I’m saying nothing horrible about the beautiful and talented Amanda because I don’t want her to use the red buzzer on me and my guinea pigs (we’ll be wearing matching silver sequinned outfits) when we do our dance routine on BGT next year. There’ll be 5 guinea pigs, and me – will The Priory have space for all of us ?

You too will be able to afford the Priory with your growing fortune from your midnight writes and massive contract deadlines….! The food is very nice I am told – but better to aim for a sanctuary villa in the Med I think! Why? the Uxbridge writing group would love to sit by your pool for inspiration! XXXXX

  7. Hi Siobhan

Never mind the cuppa – where’s the wine?

Actually I found Susan very inspiring – I am attempting to follow my own dream at the moment in the midst of a lot of hostility. When I saw Susan at the first BGT audition i thought – Yesss!!! Here’s to all us dreamers – the flame keeps burning. – It was sad to hear she was taken to the Priory – but it was probabley a stress reaction to a very intense time not a major mental illness – I hope She carries on singing – the dream has sustained her all these years – she will learn to handle it- -

Oh and good luck to you Siobhan with your new book – I was so pleased to hear it was accepted – can’t wait to read it.

  8. Cheers, Sonya, I’ll hunt out a nice bottle of Lambrini!
Thank you all for your lovely feedback re the site – do pop by again!
